Byline: ANTHONY PEACOCK
The 2009 World Rally Championship season kicks off Jan. 30-Feb. 1, not with the traditional Monte Carlo Rally but with Rally Ireland, the new season opener under the new rotation system. Events now share slots on the calendar from year to year. Ireland is the first of 12 rallies, down from 15 as part of the FIA's cost-cutting initiative. With new technical regulations slated for 2010 and a turbulent winter following the withdrawals of Suzuki and Subaru, the WRC is in the midst of a transition. Here's what to watch for in 2009.

We'll find out now that former Subaru factory shoe Chris Atkinson is in the same car as Loeb (at least, for Rally Ireland), while Petter Solberg will pilot a private Ford entry.
