Byline: PETE LYONS
Why is it so hard to make a good movie about racing? Because most who attempt it make movies about everything except the racing.
That's clear now, thanks to Audi's Truth in 24, a new feature-length documentary about the 2008 Le Mans race.
It was created by Intersport and NFL Films, producers new to racing who came in with fresh eyes. Theirs is an epic treatment of an epic conflict: Audi Sport Team Joest's unyielding battle to beat the faster Peugeots.
Hollywood tried to tell such a story in 1971, and Le Mans, starring Steve McQueen, had enough realism to stand as an enthusiast's icon for all these decades.
Step aside, Steve. Truth in 24 is the new sheriff of La Sarthe.
That's because, true to its title, it's all true. No sappy love stories. No artful dialogue or moody Method acting. No invented (or copied) personalities. No ridiculous track tactics or phony wreckswrecks there are, but they're real. All we see is the racing, as it actually happened.
