The East European Quarterly was conceived, some forty years ago, during the early years of "detente" and "peaceful co-existence." It was conceived as a means of providing a channel for the resumption of serious research and meaningful dialogue among scholars East and West, through publication of significant contributions to the field of East European history, sociology, economics, literature and other social sciences.
Our publication sought the collaboration and support of all scholars, young and old, devoted to the attainment of the goals of the journal in the spirit of true scholarship and mutual respect. From modest beginnings, in 1967, and for the following forty-two years, nearly one thousand articles by scholars young and old from throughout the world appeared in the Quarterly. Moreover, the offshoot of the East European Quarterly, the East European Monograph Series of scholarly studies on, or related to, East Central and Southeastern Europe, now comprises nearly 800 volumes produces by members of the international scholarly community.
