Aso pledges to fix economy

Prime Minister Taro Aso expressed his determination to focus all the government's efforts on economic recovery in his policy speech delivered at a plenary session of both houses of the Diet on Wednesday afternoon.

In his first policy speech at an ordinary session since taking office in September, Aso said his government will pursue a vigorous and secure society, while he explained the necessity of raising the consumption tax in 2011.

On economic policy, Aso said, "By taking bold countermeasures, will aim to be the first to emerge from the recession."
