Contractors seeking simpler, state-wide building code, too. (Florida)

Florida's construction industry, already pushing for a simpler contractor-licensing system, is tackling another issue that could prove even more contentious: building codes.

Like contractor-licensing regulations, the state's building codes are a patchwork of rules that confuse and frustrate developers, architects and contractors.

Complaints about the complex and sometimes inconsistent web of building codes in Florida led Gov. Lawton Chiles last year to establish a Building Code Study Commission. The 28-per-son board will meet all year and is scheduled to give its suggestions to legislators by Dec. 31.
