Breed Technologies is in a race that could win it the checkered flag or leave it in a ditch - wheels up.
The Lakeland-based manufacturer of automobile airbags and crash sensors is furiously at work to develop "smart" airbags that employ electronic devices to vary deployment speeds based on the weight of the occupant.
One of its biggest competitors in this race - and the company that now commands the biggest market share of the airbag industry - is TRW Inc. As part of its bid to beat the rest of the pack, TRW late last month agreed to pay $418 million to acquire control of two companies owned by Canada-based Magna International Inc., which also makes airbag components and other automotive parts.
