DRIVE ARIZONA > Apache Trail Historic Road
There is an abundance of scenic drives surrounding Phoenix. The most well known is the Apache Trail, located east of Phoenix.
Along the 40-mile route, originally built to transport construction equipment for the Roosevelt Dam, you can stop at Goldfield Ghost Town, take in the sights of the Superstition Mountains, visit the famous Lost Dutchman's Mine and Canyon Lake, and stop for lunch at the Tortilla Flats. The second leg takes you through the Sonoran Desert, where you will descend to Fish Creek Canyon, and by Apache Lake to arrive at Roosevelt Dam.
Be warned: Parts of the trail are unpaved but can be traveled in most cars, and the run is not for the faint of heart, as portions are narrow and run along cliffs. To get there from Phoenix, take I-10 south to U.S.-60 east until you reach the Apache Junction to jump onto State Route 88.
