KOLA has just passed its tenth year of publication and the editors would like to see it become an institution. It is one of the few literary magazines that deals mainly with black subject matter and the only black literary magazine published in Canada. KOLA is a source of pride to those who contribute to its continued existence in the intellectual and historical literary spheres.
Over the years, there has been a tremendous effort to keep the magazine afloat and to respond to a need in the existence of a people. The world today, though seemingly different than yesterday's, evolves on principles that are as old as time. One of these is the preservation of self through the creation of traditions from which institutions evolve, supported by the moral and spiritual convictions of our beliefs.
1998 was one of the most trying and exciting years in the history of putting this magazine together. Despite the many highs and lows experienced, KOLA was brought intact to the beginning of a new year, renewed with a stronger sense of purpose.
Illness, deaths and relocation had their toll on our voluntary help which left us with some new experiences in crisis control. On the other hand, we had a few wonderful moments. The city bubbled over with the delight of writers. Some of Canada's best ...
