SAITAMA / High schooler in late 30s makes fresh start in life

Yomiuri

In a nationwide public speaking competition organized for high school students on the theme of life as a student, a 37-year-old third-year student has won the Health, Labor and Welfare Minister's Prize.

Sayoko Shibata of Saitama Prefecture's Asaka High School, spoke of how she managed little by little to discover her inner self. Shibata used anecdotes to tell how she dropped out of school as a teenager due to bullying, and at the age of 35 decided to attend a nighttime high school. She also mentioned the close friendships she made with classmates much younger than her.
