HERDING CATS IS A SAYING, ONE DEFINITION goes, that means a task that is extremely difficult or impossible to do, due to one or more variables being in flux and uncontrollable. The American politician Trent Lott titled his political reminiscences Herding Cats: A Life in Politics, referring to the difficulties in being a Senate majority leader.
Ive repeatedly pointed out that our political class has a marked preference for one-party government: but there always comes a time when the herding instinct among politicians leads to success becoming unwieldy. The present ruling coalition now has that problem: its so big, any move toward a political goal ends up like herding cats.
