TOUGH TIMES CONTINUE
Watkins Glen International is the latest NASCAR track to enter 2009 without a title sponsor for its Cup race, after Centurion Boats opted out of the final year of its contract because of the poor economy. Watkins Glen joins Darlington, Dover (both events), Pocono (both events), Michigan in August, Atlanta in September and Kansas as tracks without title sponsors.
F1 TEAMS COMMITTED
Rumblings that Honda will not be the only automobile manufacturer to quit Formula One (Com-petition, Dec. 15) were refuted by all five remaining companies. "Our Formula One involvement is an integral part of the company strategy, said BMW board member Klaus Draeger. "There is no better platform for demonstrating our brand values. Renault and Toyota, the teams thought most likely to quit next, issued statements saying they are committed to remaining in the sport, as did Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz.
IMPROVED RENAULT
Formula One engine development is frozen, but the FIA World Motorsport Council approved changes to Renault's engine for 2009 after it became clear that the V8 was down on power to others in 2008. All F1 teams approved Renault's proposed changes.
