I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO attend the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Cable television and the Internet help pull the excitement closer, but it wasn't always so.
In the mid-'80s, my brother Ed and I followed IMSA closely, spending our beer money on gas to see races live at the classic venues: Lime Rock, the Glen, Road Atlantaeven Charlotte hosted prototypes back then. We always talked about Florida in January, but we never got there.
In January 1986, we were spending beer money on beer. It was after midnight, and we dreamily imagined what was going on along pit road. Ed got a glint in his eye and said, "Let's call information. There were several listings for Daytona International Speedway. We picked the most promising.
"Timing tower. The voice was official but bored coming across the speaker phone.
Ed slipped into his role: "I'm calling from the Poughkeepsie Progressive, and we need an update on local driver Rob Dyson.
The name of the fictitious paper, invented on the spot, was enough to warm the voice on the other end. "Ah, Dyson! He is doing well. And he rattled off a few key statistics.
"What about Al Holbert?
