In early 2008, Kia added the all-important third row to the stylish Sorento. With this the Kia joined the tough Fortuner seven-seat diesel mid- size SUV segment, where Isuzu's full-size Alterra, Ford's mid-size Everest and Hyundai's compact Santa Fe, were, until the arrival of the mid-size Mitsubishi Montero Sport, fiercely trying to gnaw at the Toyota's unshakable grip.

The Sorento improves upon the Fortuner with its lighter steering and American car-like soft ride, thanks, in part, to 75 series Kumho Road Adventure ST radials as opposed to the lower profile 60 series tires of the Toyota. However, the Fortuner roundly beats the …
