Major computer retailers are coming back to the Bay Area for more.

Despite heavy competition and razor-thin margins that are squeezing consumer electronics retailers nationwide, CompUSA, Computer City, Egghead Software and Computown all have opened stores in the Bay Area in the last six weeks. The resurgence comes as retailers report a sizzling computer retailing market in the area.

The heavy concentration of sophisticated computer users and a thriving economy have national chain stores clamoring for Bay Area sites, while local chains are consolidating their position in the market.
