Sebastien Loeb's season can be summed up by his own comments after he won the Rally Great Britain, his record-breaking 11th win of the season. "It's nice to have the record now for 11 wins in one year, he said. "But in any case, even if I had not won in Britain, I already had the record for the most number of wins in one year, anyway. So it's not been too bad.
An alternative take on the situation came from Olivier Quesnel, the boss of Citroen, which was assured of its third manufacturers' title in Britain thanks to Loeb's win and a third place for his teammate Dani Sordo. "We won the drivers' title, the manufacturers' title and 11 rallies. Sebastien also won in Finland and Great Britain, the only two rallies that were missing from his list of victories. Really, it's hard to imagine how we could have done better.
Rally Great Britain, however, wasn't typical of the season. From the opening day, it was Ford's Jari-Matti Latvala who took the lead in the icy and slippery conditions, which led to a number of stages being canceled. Loeb gradually pegged the gap until he overhauled Latvala on the final stage to claim a dramatic win.
Ford needed to finish first and second on the Rally Great Britain to have any chance of claiming the manufacturers' champion-ship, but with Ford's lead driver, Mikko Hirvonen, losing four minutes with a roll on the opening day, it would be tough.
