Tony Schumacher domi-nated Top Fuel, Cruz Pedregon finished strongest in Funny Car, and Jeg Coughlin Jr. was his usual unflappable self in Pro Stock as the 2008 NHRA Championship Drag Racing season closed with three previous champions returning to the top of straight-line motorsports.
In arguably the best performance in auto racing, Schumacher set several records in his Alan Johnson-tuned U.S. Army dragster. He claimed his fifth-straight world title and his sixth overall, won 15 of 24 races, reached 18 final rounds, had a streak of seven straight wins and 10 consecutive final-round appearances and moved into first place on the all-time Top Fuel list with 56 career wins. He also racked up 76 elimination-round wins, which is tied for the most ever.
"I have a feeling people will look back at this team as one of the best ever, Schu-macher said. "These guys just didn't make any mistakes. I had a perfect race car every time. It was like a dream deal for a driver. And then you add in Alan Johnson. Man, I almost felt sorry for the other teams.
