It is hard to imagine the pressure the Atlantic Championship's management was under last year. After planning a schedule paired largely with parent series Champ Car, suddenlywith Champ Car's demiseAtlantic had to try to forge a last-minute season that would satisfy racers and sponsors. With help from Mazda, the series managed to run 11 races in 2008, with four in Canada and the rest in the United States, marking its 35th anniversary.
The season opener at Long Beach in April garnered the most publicity, when Swiss driver Simona De Silvestro won, a victory overshadowed by the first win for another female driver that same weekend, Danica Patrick in the IndyCar Series race in Japan. De Silvestro remained competitive throughout the year, with eight top-10s. Florida rookie Jonathan Summertonthe only American driver to win an A1 Grand Prix series racealso gained attention. Summerton took two Atlantic wins, at Edmonton and Road America. Series stalwarts James Hinchcliffe and Jonathan Bomarito also won.
