HART: This is one of those vehicles that you look at, scratch your head and wonder, "What were they thinking? It's an SUV. No, wait, it's a gigantic crossover. It's both.
But really, for all purposes, this is a sport-ute. It handles like one, rides like one, has the curb weight of one, so case closed. The real joy in this vehicle, for me, was the diesel engine. It's quiet and cleanno hint of diesel-exhaust smell the entire weekendand proves that diesels should be part of every automaker's offerings. It just makes good sense, even with diesel prices still about a buck more per gallon than regular unleaded.
This vehicle could have a bit better throttle response, but except for that, I really liked it. Recalibrate your brain a bit, as the thing redlines at 4,400 rpm. But on a cold November weekend, it was a great ride.
GRITZINGER: While I'd likely opt for the GL if I were buying a big Mercedes utility wagon, this diesel makes whatever you're driving better. Hart rightly points out that diesel fuel isn't cost-competitive with unleadedfor now. But once the big pendulum starts to swing back, it'd be good to know that you're getting more miles for your money with a diesel.
