Scale models flaunt their detail and craftsmanship
This year's crop of dynamic cars in scale brings some surprises. The miniature masterpieces featured on these pages are 1:24 or 1:18 in scale, and each replica pushes the envelope in its crafting and its presentation. They all capture the eye and the imagination, inspiring nostalgia and desire. BY JAY ENGEL
1961 FERRARI 156 F1 "SHARK NOSE
The lines on this car are simple and dramatic, with a most unusual frontal design. None of the real 156 F1s exists, but CMC managed to create a flawless model. This 1:18-scale piece is accurate and complete, right down to the last seatbelt buckle. This is the No. 4 car driven to victory in Belgium by the late Phil Hill as he became the first American F1 World Champion. $319, www.cmc-modelcars.de/us
1967 FERRARI 330 P4
This is the first of GMP's Masterpiece Collection in 1:18 scale. The model replicates the P4 driven by Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon in the BOAC at Brands Hatch in 1967. It has a removable nose and engine cover, opening doors, fuel-filler panels and gas caps. The tires are removable via spinoffs, and the huge V12 is a visual feast. $280, www.gmpdiecast.com
