YOKOHAMA--Edwin Van der Sar's star turn in a penalty shootout handed Manchester United the European Cup. According to Alex Ferguson, his performance Thursday kept them on course for the FIFA Club World Cup, too.

The veteran goalkeeper made three crucial saves against Gamba Osaka in their 5-3 semifinal win at International Stadium Yokohama, stops Ferguson said kept his side in the game at crucial times.
