DOWNTOWN - Some say it will be good for Dallas, attracting convention-center business and boosting a healthy economy. Others claim it will throw an industry into chaos.

As St. Louis-based HBE Corp. takes over management of the Southland Center and converts the Harvey Hotel and two office buildings into a 1,700-room Adams Mark hotel, industry insiders are expressing reservation, joy and even bitterness about the massive expansion.

The renovation will bring to life a huge office complex that withered from viability as premier Downtown office space became available en masse during the 1980s.
