In Minnesota, Republican senator Norm Coleman is, at this writing, sweating out the results of a tight reelection contest with faded jokester Al Franken. Election-night returns showed Coleman ahead by about 700 votes, which dwindled to 200 after correction of arithmetical and transcription errors. So far there is no firm evidence of intentional misconduct, though an electronic vote record that was somehow date-stamped two days before the election raised a few eyebrows, as did a small county's addition of 100 votes for Franken and an election official's reportedly discovering 32 absentee ballots in the trunk of her car.
