The election added another kink to Joe Lieberman's relationship with the Democratic party. Rejected by Democratic voters in the 2006 primary for his support of the Iraq War and the surge, he had to win reelection as an independent. This year he backed John McCain for president in a prime-time speech at the GOP convention.
