RAIDERS made off with an ATM bank machineafter smashinga 4x4 vehicle through the shuttersofa fillingstation and post office early yesterdaymorning.It is the fourth raid in the area in the past two weeks.
The gang abandonedtheir vehicleinside the shop, which was virtually wrecked.The raid, at McCullaghsservice station at Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow, occurredbetween 3am and 4am yesterday. The thieves are understood to have made their getaway, with a substantialamount of cash in the Bank of Ireland ATM, in a second car.
It is also understood the raid is connected to three similar robberies inthe area over the past two weeks.
Gardai would not confirm how much money was taken in the raid but shop owner James Bolger said the stolen ATM containeda substantial amount of cash.
This is a shopkeepersnightmare,said Mr Bolger. Urgent action needs to be taken to protect retailers from crimes like this and to ensure that gardai have sufficientresourcestobring the criminals tojustice,hesaid.
This is the fourth such raid in the area in two weeks and if additional resources arent made available to gardai its guaranteed to happen again and again.
