HE BEARS a striking resemblance to-his-grandfather,Eamon de Valera...and now Minister amon O Cuiv has shown he is just as quick to stand his ground under fire.

While the first taoiseach-held the line against British troops at BolandsMill in 1916, the ministerfaced a less tyrannical force.

Dev Og, as he is known, told yesterday how he had to forcibly restraina student after he and his terrifiedsecretarywere surrounded by a group of angry protesters. The Ministerfor Community, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs said that when he and Education Minister Batt OKeeffe arrived for a function at NUI Galway they were surrounded by a group of 50 one of whom was wielding a length of timber.

Denying he used too much force in the incident on Tuesday night, Mr O Cuiv added: My secretary is very shaken by the event. She was forced into a corner and, of course, I forcibly restrained the student squashing us, literally, into the corner.

Saying that they were coming at us in an aggressive manner, he added: I had to hold somebody back while the securitygot the door open and let us in to get away from the mob.
