Marx has a new relevance in a globalised age, especially given his insights on ecology and conservation, argues Sobhanlal Mukherjee Mr OP Sabherwals readable and thought-provoking piece on Karl Marx in these columns (20 October) deserve careful reading and analysis. He regards Marx as the greatest thinker of the millennium, a view supported by the majority of listeners in a recent BBC poll. He specifies Marxs originality as a dialectical materialist, a theorist of surplus value and an enthusiast for scientific, socialist revolution. He says: Marx is all this and more. I agree. But Marx and Marxism need re-interpretation, from a new millennial perspective.

Mr Sabherwal correctly values Marxism as an important a methodological tool for studying socioeconomic evolution, just as Darwins theory studied the biological evolution of the human species. Leaving aside some of his rude and rough propaganda gimmicks, we remember how Marx marshalled appropriate arguments and factual references with aplomb. Amazingly. …
