Dec. 8--WEST PALM BEACH -- Four weeks after the New York City Marathon, Anton Van Zyl took a gamble and it paid off.
The Fort Lauderdale runner, still working off his marathon training base, took it out fast to win the men's half marathon title at the Marathon of the Palm Beaches.
Van Zyl, 35, a South African native, won the 13.1-mile race in 1 hour, 14 minutes and 18 seconds. His mile pace was 5:41.
John Reback, 38, of Jupiter, who won the 5K race on Saturday, ran out of gas and finished runner-up in 1:16:05, clicking off a 5:49 mile pace.
