India's department of telecommunications has asked operators to present proposals for using the universal service obligation fund (USOF) to develop technologies for rural areas, reports the Financial Express. The USOF allocates financing for rural projects using fixed and mobile telephony. All telecom companies contribute 5 percent of their adjusted gross revenue (AGR) to the USOF.
