Berlin - Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) [Christian Democratic Union] has promised tax relief for the time after the 2009 Bundestag election. "Due to the 'cold progression' [where every raise or promotion automatically puts the wage earner in a higher tax bracket], very high tax rates apply to ever more people with a medium income.
