This past June, Erica Nelson, 23, and Abby Flantz, 25, made a last-minute decision to go on a two-day hike in Alaska's remote Denali National Park and Preserve ... without telling any of their family or friends of their route or staying on the few trails in the park. Those decisions soon came back to haunt them.

The pair met after moving north from Utah and Minnesota, and they'd quickly bonded over their mutual love of hiking. They headed into the park armed with a compass and a map--plenty of navigation equipment for the knowledgeable duo. However, they incorrectly guessed which river they were following, rendering those tools all but useless.

"We realized we were lost at the end of the third day--up until then, we thought we'd just misjudged how far we had to go," Erica says. "We panicked, and it took everything we had in us to stay positive."

That wasn't easy to do when their canteens ran dry, forcing them to drink river water, rain, and melted snow.
