Before the Appeal Court judgment of November 11, 2008 ratifying the earlier decision of the Election Tribunal which declared Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as the duly elected governor of Edo state, the morale of the Edo people was very low. Sports men and women inclusive.

From 1999 when Lucky Igbinedion took over to when he left in 2003, the people never really felt what it was like to enjoy the dividends of democracy. Sports, which used to be the main stay of the people, a legacy set by Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia as governor of the Midwest region and Bendel state, like other sectors, was relegated.

Sports suffered under the military especially in the days of the late maximum ruler, General Sani Abacha whose stock in trade it seemed, was appointing military officers who had no interest in sports to govern the state. Even under General Jerry Useni, who loved sports and hockey in particular, sports never really thrived.
