SALEEN FOR SALE
Specialty-car maker Saleen Automotive is on the block. The company, which built the Ford GT and dozens of high-performance Mustangs, is exploring a sale. Officials hope to finalize a deal in early 2009.
Saleen was founded in 1984 and has produced more than 12,000 vehicles since then, including such memorable rides as the Saleen S7 and Dan Gurney and Parnelli Jones Mustangs.
In recent months, a number of top Saleen executives have left the company, including general manager Marques McCammon, who landed at California electric-car maker Aptera Motors.
The founder of the Troy, Mich., company, Steve Saleen, left in May 2007. His new SMS brand will begin limited production of two high-performance Dodge Challengers this year, he says.
