JIMMIE JOHNSON WANTED to finish the Checker O'Reilly 500K at Phoenix with enough points to make NASCAR's season finale at Homestead little more than a formality. He wanted to gain enough to hold a 162-point lead, which would have clinched his third consecutive Sprint Cup if he simply started the Ford 400.

He got close, but he must finish at least 36th to win it, even if second-ranked Carl Edwards wins the race and leads the most laps. (They are the only drivers eligible for the Cup.)

"We have a chance if he has some real terrible luck in Homestead, Edwards said, all but conceding the title. "It's possiblenot probable but possiblefor us to win it. I guarantee you that won't change the way we do business. We're going to Homestead with everything we've got, to be aggressive and try to win.

Johnson was almost perfect at Phoenix. He started from the pole and led the most laps (three times for 217 of the 313) in beating Kurt Busch, Jamie McMurray, Edwards and Denny Hamlin. The rest of the top 10 were Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Jeff Burton and David Ragan. Johnson led laps 81 to 100, 110 to 211 and the final 95, from 219 to the overtime finish at lap 313.

He began the day 106 points ahead of Edwards and finished it 141 ahead. With only 161 points available at Homestead, Johnson would have been home free if he'd gained 58 instead of 35. His lead was 162 or more at several points, but Edwards made a late charge to ...
