PIVATO RECOVERING
WRC co-driver Patrick Pivato, given a 50 percent chance of survival following an accident during the Rally Japan (Compe-tition, Nov. 10), is on the road to recovery. Francois Duval's 45-year-old French teammate was to be airlifted to a hospital in Lyon, France, after waking up from his medically induced coma following a series of operations for internal injuries. In the accident, Pivato sustained a broken pelvis and a fractured right tibia, which needs a final operation in France to be reset.
HONDA SEAT OPEN
Formula One veteran Rubens Barrichello might have raced in his last Grand Prix. Jenson Button is under contract with Honda Racing for 2009, but Barrichello's deal expired, and the team will test two Brazilian young guns in Barcelona later this month. They are Bruno Senna, nephew of Ayrton Senna, and Lucas Di Grassi, both GP2 Series graduates. Grassi has been part of Renault's driver-development program for the past five years.
DA MATTA TO RACE
Former CART and Formula One driver Cristiano da Matta is on the verge of racing full-time in Grand-Am next season. Da Matta has raced only twice since he crashed into a deer while testing his Champ Car at Road America in August 2006. He was to test for Miami-based Alegra Motorsports at Daytona International Speedway the week of Nov. 10. Team boss Carlos de Quesada said that da Matta almost certainly will race for the team in the Daytona 24 Hour season opener and the full season if sponsor-ship can be found.
