IT'S NOVEMBER, SO WE'RE ALL inundated with "giving opportunities to bolster our charitable contributions as the tax year ends. This is one that, like the CARA auction Dutch Mandel told you about last week, gives you a chance to support the racing community.

It's been 10 years since Pete Lyons and I covered the groundbreaking for the Inter-national Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen, N.Y., and the facility is now but bursting at the seams. There are plans for a needed expansion to accommodate the vast, growing collection of books, films and original archival materials (race records, posters, programs, personal papers of racers and journalists, club newsletters, photos, home movies, videos and more).

When I last visited in early October, Lyons was the guest speaker for the center's annual open house, and he kept a crowd's rapt attention for more than an hour and a half, displaying his photos and telling tales of his years covering Formula One and Can-Am. Similar "Center Conversations are a regular activity, and the list of speakers who have appeared is a growing who's who of motorsports.
