IN conjunction with the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth on February 12, 2009, some 50 new books about him are scheduled to appear between now and 2010. An especially welcome new title is Tried by War, by the eminent Civil War historian James McPherson. There are surprisingly few books examining Lincoln's wartime leadership, despite the fact that he is, in McPherson's words, "the only president whose entire administration was bounded by war."
