Be Inc. passed over Apple Computer to strike an operating system licensing deal with Macintosh clone maker Power Computing.
Beginning in the first quarter of next year, Power Computing will offer Be's BeOS along with Apple's MacOS on all its Macintosh clone PCs. Separately, Purity Software plans to ship the first commercial Web server for the BeOS platform during that quarter.
New customers of Power Computing's PowerTower, PowerTower Pro, PowerCenter, and PowerBase PCs will receive a bootable CD-ROM of the BeOS at no additional charge, officials said. Existing Power Computing users will be able to obtain a copy of the BeOS from Be's Web site.
