McLaren is testing prototypes of its $250,000 P11, bringing the launch of 2010's most anticipated supercar closer.
Using the same XP code names employed on the mid-1990s McLaren F1 project and the more recent Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, the prototypes of the carbon-fiber and aluminum two-seaters are testing the basic mechanical components before the car's launch.
A mid-engine coupe, shown in these spy photos, arrives in November 2010, followed by a soft-top spider (in the illustration) in November 2011.
The styling of the P11 has evolved considerably since the start of the year, coinciding with the appointment of former Fiat and Ferrari designer Frank Stephenson to McLaren.
Stephenson has been given the freedom to come up with a fresh design, within the constraints of the fixed engineering hard points and a desire to incorporate the character of the peerless Peter Stevens-designed McLaren F1.
Both P11 models are being developed together around a carbon-fiber center tub with aluminum front and rear subframes, one carrying the front suspension module and the other the engine, transmission and rear-suspension assembly.
