One evening this past May, Janelle * walked into her suburban Detroit home, greeted her dog, and received a phone call that upended her life.

Citibank was checking on a suspicious charge account that had been opened in her name. Puzzled, she denied doing it. Then the caller read Janelle's Social Security number off the account, and reality sank in.

"Someone hadn't just stolen my credit--she'd stolen my life," says Janelle, 30, a human-resources representative. "I was terrified."

She filed a police report, halted her mail, put her savings account on hold, and froze her credit. But the thief had already gone on a spending spree. Seven accounts totaling $11,000 worth of damage had been opened in Janelle's name, including a $4,500 visit to Sam's Club. She couldn't believe it. "I was vigilant about protecting my credit--I never bought anything online or charged anything over the phone," she says.

Janelle provided a local police detective with new information she'd gathered by calling retailers and pin pointing the time purchases were made, the amount spent, and even the register at which the transaction took place.
