My life seemed perfect. I planned to go to medical school after I graduated from college, and my boyfriend, Tres, and I were discussing marriage. Then one night, I was sitting at my computer when my right foot went numb. So I searched online for what could have caused it. The result? A stroke.
I didn't believe it, but when the sensation began to spread and my head started hurting, I asked Tres to drive me to the ER near my house in Lafayette, Louisiana. Eventually, I was transferred to an intensive-care unit and spent the next three days in a medicated haze. The doctor told my family that a rapture in my brain had caused a stroke and I'd never recover.
