The Russian leadership has committed an unforgivable mistake by announcing its unilateral recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This decision will lead to further escalation of tension in the Caucasus and in the world as a whole, severe damage to Russia's international stature, and also costs for all the peoples who were drawn into the conflict.
