Company goes ahead with second phase of Hillsboro wafer plant

Construction workers are pouring concrete one year ahead of schedule on phase two of the as-yet-unfinished Komatsu Silicon America wafer plant in Hillsboro's Dawson Creek.

The second phase will eventually provide 400 of the 500 jobs the company is expected to bring to the area.

Plans originally called for the $400 million Komatsu plant to start here with a silicon-wafer coating facility supplied with wafers made at Komatsu plants in Japan and Taiwan. Construction of a Hillsboro wafer-making facility would wait until after the coating operation went in commercial operation next summer.
