In our News and Views section, Feminist Studies has been bringing to the attention of our readers a variety of activist feminist publications and organizations. For this issue, Karla Mantilla, Feminist Studies' managing editor, interviewed Daisy Hernandez, editor of ColorLines magazine, a national, multi-racial publication that features writing, art, and photography that addresses the complexity of issues that affect communities of color.
--Claire Moses
Karla Mantilla: For those readers who may be unfamiliar with ColorLines, how would you describe the magazine? What is its format and a general description of its contents?
Daisy Hernandez: ColorLines is the national newsmagazine on race and politics. We look at race, at race relations, and at solutions. We also cover emerging artists of colors and poke fun at the highs and lows of our political lives. We have a blog at www.racewire.org and Web exclusive stories at www. colorlines.com. We're published by the Applied Research Center. We're a bimonthly print publication.
KM.: When did you begin publishing?
D.H.: We are in our eleventh year of publication.
K.M.: Did you see the magazine as filling a particular need that was previously unmet
