The acquisition of maintenance, repair, and operating supplies (MRO) has long been a backwater in purchasing and overall product/service management in most firms. This study revealed that in many organizations, MRO purchasing was responsible for the majority of purchasing activity in terms of purchase orders issued, while at the same time it involved a minority of total expenditures. It is often one of the least systematic and the most problematic areas of purchasing.
