Jorg Haider was one of the most disturbing figures in Europe. An Austrian born in 1950, he was the child of convinced Nazis. After the war, these parents were treated as social pariahs, which Haider found unfair. A deep sense of resentment drove him into far-right politics. Soon he became a member of parliament, and then leader of the minority and extremist Freedom party, which won enough votes in a general election to enter for a time a coalition government with the People's party.
