Within seconds of John McCain's selection of Palin, her political enemies in Alaska began spreading word about "Troopergate." The alleged scandal is that Palin fired Alaska public-safety commissioner Walt Monegan because he would not fire a state trooper who had been involved in a messy divorce with Palin's sister. As details emerged--often on the front pages of papers that hadn't lifted a finger to look into the life and times of Joe Biden--it became clear that Palin did indeed want the trooper fired, in part because he had violated all sorts of rules of conduct.
