I keep hearing people say "Why shouldn't a voter be required to show ID at the polls? After all, I have to show ID to cash a check at the grocery store."
League members, everywhere, please, please help me explain to the public why an ID requirement for voters is a BARRIER to voting for many citizens.
No, an ID requirement doesn't adversely affect me and it probably doesn't adversely affect you. I drive a car; I have a passport; I cash personal checks; I fly on airplanes. I have my own business and I can drive to the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) for an ID any time I want without getting permission from my boss. I use a computer and a telephone, so I can easily find out what hours the MVD is open and its location. I am young (relatively) and healthy (so far), own a car (gas-guzzler), and can easily get to the MVD without assistance.

But, you know something interesting--there are approximately 11 million eligible voters in this country who don't possess a photo ID, and most of them can't easily get one! Who are they?
* 18 percent of Americans over 65 (6 million) don't have a photo ID and the percentage goes way up for those over 75 years of age.
* 25 percent of African Americans don't have a photo ID.
