This volume contains excerpts drawn from a collection of almost one thousand interviews with trade union activists housed in the Special Collections of the State Historical Society in Iowa City, Iowa. The collection had its origins in the installation of a one percent per capita tax of all unions affiliated with the Iowa Federation of Labor. In this way, the Iowa Labor History Oral Project obtained secure funding and was launched in 1974. Indeed the interviews brought together in this book serve as a testimonial to the vision and sense of the importance of the past to the future which Iowa trade unionists have fostered.
