I was disappointed to read in Daily Monitor of October 3, 2008 that some MPs had proposed scrapping of government sponsorship in public universities and other public tertiary institutions.
The reasons advanced by Kawempe South MP Ssebulima Mutumba, Wakiso Woman MP Rose Ssenninde and Makerere Vice Chancellor Livingstone Luboobi are untenable.
The government sponsorship scheme does not benefit the rich only, unless the MPs are saying the scholarships are awarded corruptly, which to my understanding is not the case.
It is not true for Ssenninde to assert that the best secondary schools are dominated by the children …
