Green Challenge Debuts.(NEWS)(Brief article)
The American Le Mans Series' Green Chal-lenge arrived at Road Atlanta with a flurry of national media coverage and a bevy of government high rollerscomplete with dark-suited bodyguards in one case. Behind the PR hyperbole and the complicated equations that determine the winners, there is a point to this new environmental award.
A gasoline-electric hybrid raced at Petit as long ago as 1998, and Audi brought its FSI direct fuel injection to the series in 2001. Second-generation E85 biofuel arrived in the ALMS this year. The Green Challenge offers those trying to promote their environmental credentials the chance to shout about it and perhaps claim that they are the greenest of all.
